Saving Just One Detainee

“One PDL!”

This became the battle cry of about 50 volunteers who attended the 2nd session of the Basic Paralegal Training held at the Villa Esmeralde Clubhouse in Sta. Rosa, Laguna last September 20.

The battle cry was formed after the speaker, Missio-Amare MIGRANTI South Luzon Coordinator Atty. Tom Prado, reminded the participants that even just one PD L who is released with the assistance of a paralegal would be more than enough reward.

The second session tackled the skills and strategies needed by paralegals, and the areas where they can be of most help. Focus was given on helping detainees in city and provincial jails. The speaker pointed out that while it is still possible to assist those already convicted, the work required is better cut out for legal professionals.

Bro. Tom outlined the Rules of Criminal Procedures (Rules 110-127) starting from filing a case, preliminary investigation, arrest, bail, arraignment, pre-trial and trial, all the way to judgment.  To help participants better appreciate the complex legal procedures, he provided examples of actual cases.

The volunteers showed much enthusiasm for the work ahead. “We’ve learned a lot of things and we’re excited to start working, “shared Missio Amare GCare coordinator Mimi Gonzales, a CPA who had wanted to be a lawyer. “We know though that, in real life, rules are not always followed, so it’s good to be able to discuss these and find out how to deal with the unexpected.”

Said Peter Cabiling, Isaiah 61:1 unit head of Cavite: PDLs (persons deprived of liberty) don’t just need our prayers; they need actual work to help them.  Our project “Dalaw Mo, Sagot Ko” is much appreciated as some of them have not had a visitor for up to 5 years. They have no friends of relatives to help them to even accomplish their release papers.

Missio Amare head for Laguna Jeff Corrales: aptly concludes “There are 15 paralegals in attendance here. We hope we can save even just one soul. We will go to the jails, not relying on our own strength but on the grace of the Lord who will be guiding us.”
